Minigolf reviews: Destin, FL

The Dunes miniature golf is inside the Sandestin resort. It is an excellent course. The drawbacks would be price (I think $6.75) and it only has 18 holes. But it is a top notch golfy style course. The holes are long, well kept, and interesting. One unique feature: no borders on the edges of the greens. If you putt it off, it goes off. The holes had some planning put into them, many times you will be rewarded for thinking your shot through, and the good upkeep means that the ball does what it's supposed to do. The sandtraps are real sand, and there are lots of deep dips and steep hills. This would be a great competition course.

Big Kahuna is in many ways the opposite of The Dunes. It has lots of holes, 54, and costs only $3 for each 18. It's got a bit of charm too in it's South Pacific theme. But the holes are pretty lame for the most part (though there are some winners), and the greens are frayed. We played the hard course and it didn't seem difficult. Wildlife, mostly frogs and roaches, roam the premises. The also have go carts and games and some kid of giant ride that flips people around on the ends of a beam.

The Track is a pretty average course. There is a safari theme, composed of a few animal statues and the usual waterworks. The holes are ok, but the most memorable thing about this course was that it is very easy.

Golf Garden is another professional, golfy course. It has very long holes, and thus high pars, so a good long putter like yours truly can come in underpar. The holes are long but usually not hard.
